OPEN CALL FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS UNDER 35
WITHOUT LIMITATION BY NATIONALITY except for citizens of the Russian Federation
Objective: to create a work for ensemble of 7-10 minutes, with the possibility of electronics and visual solutions, which emulates the never-existing music of the Ukrainian Renaissance.
Mentor: Sven-Ingo Koch, Germany
Selection: The mentor will select 5 composers from the applications by July 31.
Participation is free of charge. Foreign participants and citizens of Ukraine living abroad should cover their travel and accommodation costs in Kyiv (approximately 3-4 days).
Maximum instrumentation: violin (baroque violin is also possible), viola, cello, double bass, flute, flute, clarinet, theorbo, bandura, harpsichord, percussion, electronics, visualization (projector, screens, etc.)
Result: 3 online consultations, 1 offline rehearsal in Kyiv, a concert as part of Kyiv Baroque Fest 2025 in the Philharmonic Hall, professional multichannel audio and video recording.
Narrative: In the Ukrainian lands of the respective historical period, the necessary preconditions for the emergence of the Renaissance did not exist. Economic recovery from the Mongol invasion was underway, and a new state, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, was being formed with its own administrative and social system. As a result, society was undergoing significant changes, and few people were interested in the ideas of humanism, exploration of the world around them, and continuous creativity. The lifestyle of Ukrainians immediately changed from medieval to baroque. However, relying on the fundamental features of Ukrainian culture and the logic of historical development, if the Ostrohs had lived 100 years earlier, we can try to construct our own image of the Ukrainian Renaissance, which could have connected the Middle Ages and the Modern period. First of all, its musical manifestation.
Timeline: August - development of the concept of the work, online session with Sven September - writing the score, online session with Sven October - first readings with the ensemble early November - delivery of the finished score mid-November - offline rehearsals with Sven end of November - final concert at the National Philharmonic of Ukraine as part of Kyiv Baroque Fest 2025
